Optus previously identified that certain devices may have been unable to make calls or send text messages in some very remote outback locations where Satellite Small Cell (SSC) sites operate. This also affected the ability to contact Emergency Services (Triple Zero (000) and 112) in these areas.

As of 04 June 2026, upgrades to all Satellite Small Cell (SSC) sites in remote outback Australia have been completed. As a result, previously impacted devices can now make calls to Emergency Services, including Triple Zero (000) and 112, in these areas.

What You Need to Do

If your device was previously blocked from accessing the mobile network, it has now been unblocked.

To reconnect your service:

  • Ensure your Yomojo SIM card is inserted into your device.

  • Restart your phone.

  • Allow a few minutes for your device to reconnect to the mobile network.

Previously Impacted devices

During the SSC upgrade programme, some Motorola and ZTE devices were unable to make emergency calls in certain very remote outback areas serviced by Optus Satellite Small Cell sites. Emergency calling functionality has now been restored for these devices.

What You Need to Know

Why did this happen?

Some devices were not fully compatible with the technology used by Satellite Small Cell (SSC) sites operating in very remote outback areas. As a result, affected devices may have been unable to make calls or send text messages, including calls to Emergency Services (Triple Zero (000) and 112), when connected to these sites.

Network upgrades have now been completed across all SSC sites to ensure previously impacted devices can successfully connect to Emergency Services.

What is a Satellite Small Cell (SSC) site?

SSC sites are small cellular sites in remote locations where traditional towers are unavailable. They are usually attached to existing structures and connect via satellite to the Optus network, providing coverage to towns and communities in the outback.

What are my options if I’m travelling in or near these areas?
